Run Gum Review
Problem: There are times before a workout where I need an extra boost where I've usually had some coffee or an energy drink. Though these options do help give me a boost, they aren't always easy on my stomach and because I'm drinking a liquid, they make me have to use the restroom. I needed something that:
- Didn't cause digestive problems
- Didn't cause me to have to stop a workout to use the restroom
- Wasn't full of chemicals or additives
- Didn't take a long time to get to (like having to make coffee)
- Gave me a boost of energy
- The boost of energy didn't quickly fade away
Review: I was a bit skeptical if it would give me an extra boost and how long it would take for that extra boost to kick in. I had a lot of questions.
- How much caffeine is in each piece?
- One piece of regular Run Gum has 50 mg of caffeine. One piece of the Extra Strength Run Gum has 100 mg of caffeine
- Does one or two pieces help get me an extra boost?
- I've found I need two pieces of regular Run Gum to help get me moving on those rough mornings. If it's a real rough morning and I have a long run planned, I will go with two pieces of the Extra Strength. This is the only time where I will have both pieces of Extra Strength at the same time.
- How fast does it take to feel the effect?
- It works fast! It takes less time to feel the effects than it does to get a coffee machine setup, brew some coffee, drink it and wait for that extra boost.
- How long does the effect last?
- This can be difficult to determine. I usually use Run Gum to help give me a boost before I go for a run. The combination of the run and Run Gum definitely wakes me up and keeps me alert for hours after I'm done.
- Is it difficult to open while running?
- Not at all. Each pack is has an easy tear away top. I've never found it difficult to open a pack of Run Gum while running.
- How does it taste?
- The taste did take some getting used to. This gum isn't meant to be chewed if all you're looking for is flavor. With that being said, I found myself liking the flavor of it. I've tried all of the flavors. My ranking of flavor would be: cinnamon, spearmint, mint, fruit.
- How long do you keep the gum in your mouth?
- I keep the gum in my mouth as long as I would regular gum. While I'm running, this helps prevent cotton mouth and keeps my mind focused on having to chew something. I never feel like I need to spit it out during my run.
Verdict: I've never tried caffeinated gum before trying Run Gum. My main source of caffeine came from coffee and energy drinks. Thankfully, I discovered Run Gum. It's cheaper than energy drinks and doesn't cause me any digestive problems or many bathroom breaks. I found it doesn't take long for the extra boost to kick in. There were times where I'd start chewing two pieces of regular strength gum, and I'd be starting to feel the effects before I pulled out of my drive way. As with anything caffeinated, you need to be careful with it and don't chew too many pieces of either the regular strength or Extra Strength gum in one day.
